How to Become A Professional Actress or Actor
We asked Valorie Hubbard:
How to Become an Actress or Actor Today?
There are many paths to an acting career, but success requires treating it like a business. If you want full-time results, you must commit to a professional strategy.
1. Define Your Goal
Get clear about what you want. Whether your goal is Broadway, film, television, or a specific niche, you must name it. Without a clear destination, you cannot create a map to get there.
2. Develop Your Skill Set, Actually Learn How to Become an Actress or Actor
Before auditioning, you need training. You do not necessarily need a prestigious conservatory education, but you must be prepared to perform at a professional level.
3. Build Your Brand and Materials
You are an entrepreneur; you must know what you are selling.
-
Brand Work: Identify your unique “product.”
-
Marketing Materials: Your headshot is the most important tool. Ensure your photos and video clips accurately reflect your brand and the specific market you are targeting (e.g., comedy vs. drama).
4. Execute Your Business Plan
Do not “start small”—start professionally. Focus on getting your product in front of the people who buy it: casting directors, directors, producers, and writers. Research who is working on the projects that align with your brand, and make it your business to get in front of them. This is how to become an actress or actor FASTEST!
5. Understand Representation
Don’t ask how to get an acting agent. Not yet. Most people think you need an agent to start. This is often backward. Focus on your training, brand, and marketing materials first. Once you are prepared and actively working, you can build a team (agents or managers) to work for your “company.”
Note on Amateur vs. Professional: There is nothing wrong with being an amateur actor—the term comes from the French word for “to do something because you love it.” Simply decide if you want to be an amateur with another career, or a professional committed to a business plan for full-time results.
